Uncompromising Quality
Sustainable Materials and Practices
We believe that a room should be beautiful with nothing in it, and that a custom space demands custom casework and furniture.

Whether it's a unique kitchen in curly walnut, a spectacular walk-in closet in pomelle sapele, or a one-of-a-kind mantle in quarter sawn white oak with hand-made stained glass, the piece should perfectly complement the space, and provide exceptional form and function.  If you have a project in mind, contact Curl and Burl.

Figured Walnut Casework
A Chicago-based client wanted a very special cabinet for his Gold Coast condo overlooking Lake Michigan.  This spectacular piece showcases carefully-bookmatched horizontal walnut crotch.  Inside is storage for 750 vinyl LP records, audio components, and wine glasses.  Custom needs demand custom furniture, and this cabinet is certainly one-of-a-kind.
Mid-Century Transitional Masterpiece
Tiffany and Joe's growing family demanded a new residence, and two years of introspection and careful design resulted in a spectacular custom home.  Tiffany worked with Dave from Curl and Burl for six months curating every detail for eight rooms of custom casework.  Every aspect was modeled in software - Integrated appliances, a highly-customized pantry, a media room, closets - sparing no detail, and resulting in a very special and comfortable place to live.

Historic Showpiece
Louis Kamper designed this incredible house in the historic Indian Village neighborhood of Detroit back in the turn of the century.  The owner wished to convert the third floor - formerly a ballroom - to a fantastic office/lounge, true to the original house design.  Curl and Burl was brought in and instructed to "make believe that Kamper is looking over your shoulder."  Hundreds of hours later, we see the results, with custom mouldings and carved keystones designed to match the limestone elements in the house facade.
Curly Walnut meets Rustic Pine
A space such as this requires fully custom work - it's precisely this type of challenge we live for.  Behind these book matched curly walnut panels are integrated refrigerators and pantry space.
Classic Traditional Cherry Kitchen
Andy and Irene found a hidden gem in Grosse Pointe.  Although the majority of their historic 1938 home was beautiful and functional, the kitchen did not live up to the high standards. Curl & Burl created a solid cherry custom kitchen that looks original to the house, while still providing modern functional design. Here, a highly intricate corner combines a display area with a pantry and integrated base refrigerator.

Cherry and Maple Mudroom
Jennifer and Alberto appreciate hand-made pieces, and demanded custom work for their beautiful home.  Dave worked with them for months on the design, dialing in every detail, and highlighting the combination of these two beautiful materials.  With a hand-applied hardwax oil, the results are certainly stunning, and timeless.
Custom Walnut Kitchen
This 1920s tudor has original, intricate plaster and wonderful leaded glass windows.  When it came time to do the kitchen, only the best would do.  We designed and created this stunning kitchen from rough sawn local walnut.  Every board was carefully selected to grain and color match, and highlight the beauty in the wood.
Cherry Passage Door
A room should be beautiful with nothing in it.  Doors and casework should be constructed to the same standards as high-quality furniture. At Curl and Burl, we love making custom doors.  Behind this door is a pantry room.
Liquor Cabinet in White Oak
This rustic home has refined casework, including this solid white oak cabinet carefully built to fit a nook in the logs.  An artist from Mexico provided the painting of indigenous characters.
Whimsical Backsplash
Technology gives us the power to create truly custom pieces - in this case, a continuous-grain solid walnut backsplash for a laundry room.  For this project, we used our industrial CNC, and careful design, to cut and match each part.  The homeowners love it!
Historic House, Custom Mantle
This Pleasant Ridge tudor had a dated fireplace.  Curl and Burl designed and created this 18' painted mantle and cabinet run, complete with lighting and hand made stained glass panels.  Fits like a glove!
Sophisticated and Timeless Marries Contemporary Sensibility
Months of design, planning and attention to detail in the shop yields this incredible result for an Evanston, IL kitchen,  A spectacular, one-of-a-kind book matched walnut burl -- destined for use in luxury car dashboards -- sets this kitchen above the rest.
Curvy, Curly and Burly Walnut Vanity
Even a guest bathroom deserves a beautiful piece of furniture!  This traditional bow-front vanity will certainly last the test of time... and style.

"We are so happy we hired Dave for our kitchen remodel. He helped us design a custom kitchen that includes features from our classic 1938 colonial. His attention to detail is incredible. The cabinets he built are beautiful and our kitchen springs new life to our home. We could not be more happy!"
Damian and Anastasia, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI
"I have had the pleasure of working with Dave on several custom projects.  His level of expertise in designing custom cabinetry is exceptional. The finished products were beyond beautiful.  He is by far, the most talented craftsman I have worked with in my 30 years of being in the design furnishing industry. I would highly recommend his services."
"Dave is an incredible woodworker and just a fantastic guy overall. Back in 2011, when we got married and moved into our first new home, we had Dave make us a side table that we wanted for our dining room. We weren't entirely sure of what would work best, but it all seemed perfectly intuitive to Dave. He came up with an awesome design in a rich cherry wood that blew us away. That table is still proudly displayed in our dining room, and has been the recipient of many a compliment. If you need a true woodworking artist, do yourself a favor and look no further than Dave."
Sujit and Gabriella, Portland, OR
"Dave was contracted by our St. Nicholas Parish to make two pieces for our altar area.  His work was exceptional and conveys the tone, architecture, style, and solemnity we were looking for.  Everything was produced in a timely fashion and is of the highest artistic and technical quality.  Since then, and being so pleased with his original work, we have contracted him to make five more pieces for our church.  All of the pieces are prominent fixtures in our church and will be so for decades, and possibly even for centuries, to come."
Fr. Nick Kotsis, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
"Dave, at Curl and Burl, simply does exceptional woodwork. I have been making quality metalwork for high end homes for over three decades and Dave’s cabinet, trim, and fine woodworking are second to none. We have collaborated on several exceptional jobs.  His attention to design and detail, coupled with fit and finish is based in a perfectionist’s attitude to whatever he does. Dave’s ability to merge high tech design and machining with old world craftsmanship and installation always exceeds his customers expectations."
